I'm an avid reader and I consider myself a life-long learner. My latest read and a topic I've been sharing ad nauseum with my cancer fighters and survivors is Dr. Emeran Mayer's The Gut-Immune Connection. As the cover suggests: How Understanding the Connection Between Food and Immunity Can Help Us Regain Our Health! YES ! At this point in my personal cancer journey, I am convinced that we should address this issue before we encourage our friends and loved ones to seek any type of medication for what ails them.
How are you eating? Do you consciously endeavor to feed your body what it needs to keep you well ?? Dr. Mayer contends that our gut health is at the center of our journey to wellness or disease, depending upon our choices. "Over the last 75 years, an array of serious, seemingly unrelated chronic illnesses - cardiovascular disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, autoimmune disorders, cancer, chronic liver disease, and brain disorders such as depression, autism spectrum disorder, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease - have all been steadily rising, some at astonishing rates." (P. 2) Each of these diseases is addressed as individual and separate, as though isolated and unrelated to one another. But what if the key to wellness is not addressing and treating each of these as a specific phenomenon individually, but rather as a manifestation of the body's SYSTEMIC shortcomings that give rise to this cornucopia of chronic disease? Our mission at MPoWR St Augustine is to convince everyone who will listen that we need to start with our terrain - our body - and treat it as a complex interactive system that needs fuel and nutrients and rest and repair in order to protect against/defeat all types of illness. Until we address these aspects of our day to day life and lifestyle choices, we will never know what diseases we can treat on our own through lifestyle changes. I have encountered hundreds of people who have seen complete reversals in their hypertension, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, joint pain, etc. through lifestyle changes alone. I watched as cancerous lymph nodes that were visible in my neck and that I was able to touch DISAPPEARED with nutritional changes alone. I KNOW these changes are POWERFUL. Nutrition, exercise, restorative sleep and stress management are our major foci and we firmly believe that mindful, well thought out changes in these areas are the key to healing and ultimate wellness. I am convinced that the combination of western medicine and my commitment to lifestyle changes SAVED MY LIFE. It is my hope that if you are reading this and you feel a bit convicted about lifestyle choices you've made in the past, that you will count this as DAY 1 and purpose to change starting TODAY!
